ROMANS Chapters 1-3 ANSWERS TO REVIEW QUESTIONS

The book of Romans can be divided into 4 parts. What are they? (From the Introduction letter)

Chapters 1-5 cover salvation; chapters 6-8 cover sanctification; chapters 9-11 deal with Israel; chapters 12-16 show how to apply what we learned in 1-8.

Chapter 1:

1.) Who made Paul an apostle and where did Paul get his information?

Jesus Christ made Paul an apostle and gave him his information by direct revelation. Eph 3:1-5

2.) What is faith and how do we get it?

Faith is believing what God says, and we get faith by learning and believing His word. "Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God". Rom 10:17

3.) What is a spirit?

A spirit is the part of us that knows, understands and communicates. It is our mind. I Cor 2:10-16

4.) What is the power that God uses to save people? (vs 16)

The gospel of Christ is what saves people when they believe it. I Cor 1:18,21

5.) What does the phrase, "to the Jew first and also to the Greek (Gentile)" mean?

The Jews had God’s word first, but now the Gentiles have it too. Eph 2:11-16

6.) How is God’s coming wrath revealed today?

God’s coming wrath is revealed in the gospel that Paul received from heaven from Jesus. Acts 17:30-31 & 26:13-18

7.) What evidence is there of God’s existence and character? (vs 20)

From the creation of the world we can clearly understand God’s eternal power and Godhead.

8.) What is man’s response to this knowledge about God?

Man rejects the knowledge of God and creates a god that he is more comfortable with.

9.) How does God respond to men who don’t want anything to do with Him?

God gives men up to do what they want, and they corrupt their body, soul, and spirit. Rom 1:24-32

10.) What is idolatry? When are we guilty of it?

Idolatry is serving a man-made god. We are guilty of idolatry when we live by religious or superstitious ideas about God that are not in the word of God.

11.) Are some people homosexual by nature? (vs 26,27)

No, homosexuality is "against nature."

12.) Does mankind get better or worse when left to do as he wants?

He gets worse. Man is not evolving, he is devolving.

Chapter 2

13.) In God’s sight, are moral, religious people any better than obvious sinners?

No. No one will escape the judgment of God by being religious or moral. Vs 1-3

14.) List as many of the 8 principles by which God judges as you can. (From classes 5 & 6)

1. God judges according to truth, Vs 2

2. The more guilt a person treasures up, the more wrath he will get. Vs 5

3. God judges according to men’s deeds. Vs 6

4. There is no respect of persons in God’s judgment. He judges all by the same standard of righteousness. Vs 11

5. God judges according to the truth available to a person. Vs 12

6. God judges the motives of people, their secrets. Vs 16

7. God commits judgment to Jesus Christ. Vs 15 John 5:22-23

8. God judges according to Paul’s gospel. Vs 16

15.) What is repentance?

Repentance is a reversal in thinking.

16.) If Rom 2:6-7 was the only way to get eternal life, would anyone get it?

No. No one cheerfully continues doing good all the time.

17.) What was God’s purpose for Israel? Did they live up to it? (vs 17-24)

Israel was to be a light to the world, an instructor of the nations. Instead they disgraced God.

18.) What was necessary to be a real Jew? (vs 29)

A real Jew was circumcisized physically and spiritually. Spiritually circumcisized Jews believed God’s word to them.

Chapter 3

19.) To whom was circumcision and the law of God (which included the 10 Commandments) given? To Israel only.

20.) Is there a little good in everyone? (In God’s sight?)

No. Rom 7:18

21.) What was the purpose of God’s law?

The law of God gives the knowledge of sin and proves every man guilty. Vs 19,20

22.) When Paul says, "But now...", what has changed? (vs 21)

God is no longer dealing with Israel and her law, and has now revealed how be righteous without either.

23.) What is the "faith of Christ"?

The faith of Christ refers to His faithfulness.

24.) Do you have the righteousness of God? How did you get it?

Yes, I got the righteousness of God by trusting Christ’s sacrifice as payment for my sin.

25.) What does "redemption" mean?

Redemption means to repurchase, or ransom. God bought us back to Himself with the blood of Christ.

26.) What is a propitiation?

A propitiation is a fully sufficient sacrifice. Christ’s sacrifice completely satisfies the justice of God and allows reconciliation with man.

27.) How can God be just in justifying us when we are guilty?

Our sins are paid for by Christ.

28.) What precisely is our faith in? What do we believe about Jesus to be saved?

Our faith is "in his blood".vs 25 We trust His blood to be sufficient payment for our sins.

29.) What role do our good works play in our salvation? What role did Israel’s good works play in their salvation?

Good works have nothing to do with our salvation. In Israel’s message, good works were required by their law.

30.) Did God tell people before Paul the same thing as He tells us today? No, Col 1:25,26
