Chatper 4:
- What is “the flesh”? Our human nature. What did Abraham learn about it? God does not accept anything the flesh does. Rom 8:8
- What was Abraham promised? 1. many descendents 2. a land to possess forever 3. he and his descendents would be a channel of God’s blessing to whoever blessed them. How can he inherit the world (vs 13) when he died thousands of years ago? He will be resurrected from the dead and given eternal life.
- Do we need to be the children of Abraham in order to inherit his promise of resurrection from the dead and eternal life? Yes
- Is justification a reward for good works, or an undeserved gift (by grace)? Vs 4,5 Justification is an undeserved gift, paid for by Christ’s work.
- Can a person be depending on their good works and still get justified? Vs 5 No
- Was Abraham an uncircumcised Gentile when he was justified? Yes Why is that important to us? Vs 9-11 Because, then he can be the father of us uncircumcised Gentiles who believe.
- Abraham is the father of what two groups of believers? Vs 11,12 1. his physical descendents, the Jews, who believed in time past 2. those who believe from among all nations in this age.
- Do we need to be of the circumcision (spiritual Israel) to be a child of Abraham? No
- Do we inherit eternal life by faith like Abraham, or through Israel and the law? By faith like Abraham. Our promise goes straight back to Abraham, it does not come through Israel.
- Why can we be sure of receiving eternal life? Vs 16 Because God promised, and He cannot lie, Titus 1:2
- What is faith? Vs19-21 Faith is being persuaded that what God has said, He will do.
- Does God say the same thing to us that He said to Abraham? Vs 17,18 No! Is the result the same when we believe Him? Vs 22-24 Yes. God justifys us just like He did Abraham.
- What specifically must one believe today to be justified? Vs 24,25 That Jesus died to pay for my sin and rose again.
- What did Jesus’ resurrection from the dead prove about our justification? Vs 25 It proved that all our sins are paid. Since He took our sin, if even one sin was left unpaid, He could not have risen.
Chapter 5
- Is our peace with God permanent? Yes! Why do you think so? Because once we trust Christ, all our sin is paid! Christ’s sacrifice has permanently satisfied the justice of God.
- What is our standing with God? We are justified and at peace with God. How can we use it (access it)? By faith Give an example. Vs 2 When you sin, by faith remember that your sins are paid. Be thankful and go on, instead of being driven by guilt to continue seeking forgiveness, do penance etc. or to just avoid God altogether.
- What is our future that we can rejoice in? vs 2 We will share in and put on display the glory of God.
- Are tribulations brought on us by God to show us our mistakes? No! If not, what causes them? Our own mistakes (Gal 6:7,8), our stand for Christ (II Tim 3:12), or they just come with life in a sin-cursed world (I Cor 10:13).
- Are patience, experience and hope (confidence) all gifts of grace? No. Or are they learned by tribulation? Vs 3,4 They are learned by tribulation, and increase our capacity to demonstrate God’s glory. II Cor 4:17
- How can we experience the peace of God in the midst of tribulation? Phil 4:6,7 When we earnestly pray about our tribulation, God speaks to us through the word of God that we know. We then can see things from His point of view, apply His thinking to our situation and have peace. This is why it is so important to know God’s word.
- How is the love of God shed abroad in our hearts? Vs 5; I Cor 2:12 The Holy Ghost, which is the Spirit of God, teaches us from the word of God what God has done for us because of His great love. Eph 2:4,5 As we realize the extent of His gift to us, His love fills our hearts with gratitude.
- How did God demonstrate (commend) His love for mankind once and for all? Christ died in our place when we were still His enemies. He suffered spiritual death as well as physical death for us.
- After we believe and are justified, does God love (value and esteem) us even more? Vs 9,10 Yes
- In verses 9&10, what things are we yet going to be saved from? In verse 9, we will be saved from the time when God’s wrath comes on the earth, and in verse 10, because we have His eternal life, we will be saved from death and the grave at our resurrection.
- If a person is helpful, religious and moral, but does not trust Christ, is he an enemy of God? Yes! Why? Anyone who does not believe God’s truth, opposes it with their own thoughts or religion.
- What does reconcile mean? Reconcile means to make friends of enemies. What does atonement mean? Atonement means to reconcile by means of taking away sin. Has Israel experienced her atonement yet? No. Have we? Yes. Vs 11
- Do we have more now because of Christ than we lost because of Adam? Vs 15-17 Yes
- Was it Adam’s sin, or our own sin, that made us sinners? Adam’s sin made us sinners. Is it Christ’s obedience, or our own, that makes us righteous? Christ’s obedience makes us righteous. Vs 18,19
- Why does grace reign now instead of sin? Vs 20,21 Christ paid for all sin and now offers total justification by grace. Sin has been overcome by God’s grace.
