Review of Romans 6&7 with ANSWERS
Romans 6
1. How would you briefly summarize what Romans 6 is about?
We do not have to keep sinning because our sin nature is dead, separated from us.
2. Since we are forever forgiven by God’s grace, why not just keep on sinning?
We no longer have to sin. We can live for God now, which has much better consequences. Serving sin is contrary to our new identity.
3. What does the Greek word "baptize" mean?
To totally immerse into and identify with.
4. Into what or who are we baptized? Who baptized us? Was water involved? (Vs 3,4; I Cor 12:13) We were baptized into Christ by God the Spirit and no water was involved.
5. How many kinds of baptism are in effect today? (Eph 4:5) Name and explain 3 baptisms in the Bible other than ours. (Mat 3:11)
Only one baptism is in effect today. Three baptisms for other ages are:
Water
baptism identified the person with the royal priesthood that will rule in the kingdom on earth, and signified the cleansing necessary for God’s priests. Ex 19:5,6; & 30:19-21; I Peter 2:9
Baptism of the Holy Ghost will happen when God writes His laws in the hearts of His people and causes His Spirit to totally control them. They will then be able to keep the law, and will automatically do His will. Jer 31:34,35; Ez 36:26-28
The baptism of fire will happen when the believing remnant of Israel will be immersed in life threatening difficulties during Israel’s tribulation time. Zech 13:8,9
6. What does "dead to sin" mean? (Vs 2) How has sin’s power over us been ended? In other words, why do we no longer have to sin? (Vs 6,7)
"Dead to sin" means separated from sin. Our old sin identity has been crucified and separated
from us, so we no longer have to be controlled by sin.
7. What does it mean to "walk in newness of life"? (Vs 4)
We can live now as though we are already resurrected from physical death.
8. What is "our old man" and what happened to him when we trusted Christ? How can that effect us in everyday life? (Vs 6)
Our old man is our human sin nature that has been crucified with Christ. We have a new way to think now, so we do not have to be run by our old attitudes and compulsions.
9. Once we have been baptized into Christ, is there any way that we could not be resurrected to live with Him? (Vs 8-11) No. II Tim 2:11
10. What does "reckon" mean? How are we to
reckon ourselves in relation to God? (Vs 11) Reckon means to not just understand something, but to believe, depend and act on it. We have been put (baptized) into Christ, so we are to reckon ourselves in the same position as He is, dead to sin and alive to God, regardless of our mistakes.
11. Is life a continual struggle to stop sinning? Or has Christ settled the issue of sin already? Christ has settled the issue of sin forever. We need to learn to trust that, especially when we sin.
12. What did people under the law do when they sinned? What should we do when we sin?
Under the law, people confessed their sin and brought a sacrifice. Now we need to remember that Christ’s sacrifice has totally paid for every sin we do, and be thankful that believers are already 100% forgiven.
13. Man is made of a body, a soul and a spirit. Describe each component.
The body is the physical vehicle that carries the soul. Sin and the flesh nature, dwells in the body.
The soul is that unique component that is that person. The soul contains the heart, the will, the emotions and the conscience.
The spirit is the mind. In an unsaved person, the mind is dead to God, can’t understand anything about Him. A saved person’s spirit can link up with God’s Spirit and learn the things of God from His word.

22. The object in this chapter is to "bring forth fruit unto God.". Should we be doing so by serving in "newness of spirit", or by keeping the letter of the law? (Vs 4-6)
We should serve in newness of spirit - with a mind that is renewed by God’s word so that we do His will because we see life
from His viewpoint.

Our flesh nature can never keep God’s law because it is carnal and the law is spiritual.

Because we have sin in us.
29. Is there any way to be free of the sin that lives in our bodies? How? (Vs 24, 25)
Yes! By thinking God’s
way, and not being controlled by the old self-centered thinking patterns.
30. How would you briefly summarize chapter 7?
We are dead to the law. Living by rules will kill our spiritual vitality and will not stop sin, so that is not the way to serve God today.
